April, 2013 - Everything is ready for disease warnings.

A good disease warning system requires good warning models and a network of weatherstations. Verdict Systems and Nieveen & Bouma have for many fruits and vegetables models ready. This spring, the number of weatherstations needs to grow again.

A weatherstation collects weather data. This might be exciting for fans, but unless this data is connected to warning or advice models it is often not for practical use in cultivation. This changes when it becomes clear what the effect of the weather may be on the crop. Especially with the focus on managing risks for diseases and pests. When it threatens to go wrong you want to know: Should I do something? If so, what resources are available and under what weather conditions can they best be used? This is the subject where Verdict Systems and Nieveen & Bouma Agro Weather Services (NBAWS) are specialized in.

Verdict Systems in Aalten specializes in collecting and processing and displaying data over the internet. The data is collected through weatherstations and dataloggers. The company of Joost Nieveen and Erno Bouma in Duiven specializes in the effects of the weather on crops and how to avoid any adverse effects on quality and production. The result of this cooperation is an internet based warning service and is named MeteoView. MeteoView is available for eighteen different arable fruit and vegetable crops and tomato in greenhouses.

The web service with weather data and disease warning models for farmers is used by fruit growers that are connected to Fruitmasters and CAFVePaF since 2009. Last year 3,500 people used the website. FloraHolland uses this monitoring system since 2006 to monitor their entire supply chain, including growers, auction, storage and transport.

The aim is to launch this web service for the entire fruit and vegetables sector this spring. Crucial for success is a good network of weatherstations. Verdict Systems currently has a network of 35 weatherstations throughout the Netherlands. The aim for this year is 80 weatherstations in various crops, especially in the regions where a lot of fruit and vegetable growers are. A weatherstation covers an area of ten to fifteen kilometers around that weatherstation. Within this area, according to weather expert Erno Bouma, weather patterns stay fairly the same.

Growers who want to participate can subscribe to MeteoView for 270 euro a year. A subscription provides a grower warning models for diseases and pests, advice models for crop protection use and weather data.
